Michael Swank, MD

Dr. Swank completed his fellowship training at the Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute in Alexandria, Virginia. He completed his residency training at the Northwestern University Department of Orthopaedics. He received his M.D. degree from Northwestern University, and his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University. He is certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Swank is the President and Medical Director of the Cincinnati Orthopaedic Research Institute, the Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Jewish Hospital, the Medical Director of Research for Joint Preservation, Restoration and Reconstruction at The Christ Hospital.

Dr. Swank is an active member of many local, regional, national and international societies including the Computer-Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) International, the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Medical Association (AMA), the Cincinnati Orthopaedic Society, the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the North American Spine Society (NASS),the Mid-American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (MAOS), the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA), the Clinical Orthopaedic Society (COS), the Engh Society, the Academy of Medicine in Cincinnati, the Ohio State Medical Association, and the Ohio Orthopaedic Society.  He was named a “Top Doctor” by Cincinnati Magazine in 2015, 2016, 2017, and again in 2018.

Dr. Swank’s research has led to numerous innovations in patient care that help patients recover faster, experience less pain and return more quickly to their daily life. Under his direction, the Cincinnati Orthopaedic Research Institute conducts an average of 10 clinical trials each year, evaluating new medications, surgical techniques and implants to improve surgical patient care.

Dr. Swank is internationally renowned as a guest speaker at many meetings and societies in both the U.S. and around the world. He has been featured in a number of orthopaedic surgery journals, magazines, and news broadcasts.
