Jon Koman, MD
Specialty
Knee Surgery
A former assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles, Dr. Koman’s interest in orthopedic sports medicine stems from his experience as a Division 1 college athlete. “Sports medicine is a natural choice for me as it perfectly combines my interest in orthopedic medicine and love of sports,” he explains. Dr. Koman’s expertise is in the field of arthroscopic surgery including multiple ligament reconstructions of the knee and labral and rotator cuff repairs of the shoulder. He also performs patient-specific minimally invasive knee replacements and total shoulder replacements including the highly specialized reverse shoulder replacement.
Following a residency in orthopedic surgery at Wayne State University/the Detroit Medical Center at Grace Hospital, Dr. Koman completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia where he served as team physician for the UVA athletic teams. He joined Ortho Maryland in 2001 where he remained until 2014 when he founded Koman Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Koman has co-authored research papers for several prestigious medical journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. In 2003 he co-wrote a chapter review for the second edition of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine: Principles and Practice.
A native of Baltimore, Dr. Koman works with local collegiate and high school athletic teams and has participated as a sports injury expert on numerous radio talk shows.
Dr. Koman is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and McCue Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Society. He serves as Director of Lifebridge Health Sports Medicine and is currently a Lifebridge Health Board member as well as a member of the Northwest Hospital Medical Executive Committee.
Dr. Koman resides in Baltimore with his wife and three children. Outside of work, he builds radio-controlled airplanes, a hobby that, much like his profession, requires skill, precision, patience and craftsmanship. He also enjoys participating in anything fitness-related including bike riding, tennis and weightlifting.
