Albert Lin, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. He is chief of shoulder surgery and associate chief of sports medicine at UPMC, as well as program director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, vice chair of education, co-director of the Pittsburgh Shoulder Institute, and professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Within UPMC, he is co-chair of the Shoulder and Sports Medicine Steering Committee, and he serves on the Patient Education Governance Committee, the Professional Development Subcommittee of the GMEC, and Surgical Services Oversight Committee of UPMC East. He is the head orthopaedic team physician for Duquesne University and the head team physician for Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School. Dr. Lin received his undergraduate degree with magna cum laude distinctions from Harvard University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, followed by fellowships in sports medicine at UPMC and shoulder surgery at Harvard University.

Dr. Lin specializes in the care of athletes and shoulder conditions. Patients and athletes from around the nation and world are routinely referred to Dr. Lin for his extensive experience in shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty, as well as in complex reconstructive and open surgery of the shoulder. His research interests include shoulder instability, rotator cuff pathology, and shoulder arthroplasty, and include both clinical studies and basic science research. Dr. Lin holds several national research grants as a principal investigator with the National Institute of Health, in addition to the Department of Defense, for biomechanical research in addition to multicenter clinical trials.

Dr. Lin has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters and regularly presents his research as invited faculty and visiting professor at international, national, and local meetings and webinars. He is an active committee member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), as well as a member of the AAOS Appropriate Use Criteria Committee for rotator cuff tears and the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Fellowship Education Coalition Committee. He served as co-chair for the ASES Fellows’ Day Symposium in 2021 and 2022 and was vice-chair of the shoulder and elbow program of the Orthopaedic Summit Evolving Techniques Meeting in 2022. In addition, he is on the editorial review board of several orthopaedic journals including Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery and Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (KSSTA), has served as an editor for Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics, and is a reviewer for all major orthopaedic journals.
